An original design; see Store page to purchase the Haleakala Sunrise pattern.
My husband was a volunteer firefighter, and I had a red-orange commercial fabric that looked like fire or lava. Put the two together and I came up with this pattern which can be fire, lava, or (depending on your colors) coral, the sun, a starburst, a snowflake. I hand-dyed the yellow-orange fabric to be darker at the base of the flames, brighter near the tips, then chose green for the earth (and good contrast!). This version is two interlaced layers of applique.
38 x 38 inches; completed in 2003.
In the collection of the artist.
Exhibited at: Quilt Hawaii '05, Maui, Hawaii, July 2005.
