Autumn Borealis

Autumn Borealis

Generally, I tend not to work in abstracts. For this piece, however, I wanted to overlay a realistic quilting design on a simple, bold, graphic pattern. I used a piece of fabric I painted with thickened dye and a black/magenta commercial batik. I created a sense of space and light by using neon green thread to create the highlights on the leaves, different shades of green to create the shading and depth on the scattered leaves, and warm reds/plums for the lines to simulate the swirling winds.
