On the way home…and reply for Laura

First…AAAAAARGH! Blogger is now sending just about every single comment through as “no reply,” so when someone asks me a question, I can’t reply! So, Laura…alas, not, the Tableaux / Nativity quilt won’t be in Chicago. It has been given to my school as a gift and is on permanent display in San Anselmo, California, at San Domenico School. I’m guessing you probably aren’t in the Bay Area…sorry!

Now, back to our irregularly scheduled blogging:

On the way home from Kathy’s, in China Village (up near Augusta and Waterville), I decided to come the scenic route through Liberty. I wanted to stop at Liberty Graphics, which has totally awesome t-shirts. You have to know that Liberty is at most a block long, has about six buildings to the center of the village and that’s it. Well, it was a Monday, so of course everything was closed. But this gas station is in the center of town. When was the last time you saw one of the old-time Mobil stations?

I LOVE the old winged-horse (is it Bellerophon or someone else? And why a winged horse for an automobile – gasoline company? Who cares? I love it, and love that this station is still there and looks like it does.

Hi,Sarah! I, too, love the old gas stations…they are so few and far between now! The flying horse originates from a gas station company in the late ’50’s, early ’60’s, call The Flying Ace. The symbol was that horse. I remember wanting to ride it as a little girl, and Dad laughed (w/love) while explaining that I couldn’t! When Mobil bought out the company, they retained the horse symbol. There is also a giant one in downtown Dallas on top of a building. It’s a landmark (the building is gas/oil related), but I have to look it up as to why. Great pic!

I was just going to say that — as Sarah mentions above, this horse is a Dallas landmark. Apparently, it has moved from building to building, but has always been retained as a beloved part of the downtown skyline. Your picture even looks a bit Christmasy with all the red and white.
