Liberation Day!

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Moms across Maine are celebrating:

It is Back To School Week!!!!!!!!!!!

Every year I take a picture on back-to-school day.   They are getting less and less cooperative each year.  Here is the older one, this morning–looks thrilled, eh?

And the younger one, who started yesterday (he cooperated a bit after stern words from his dad):

And this morning they couldn’t even stand on the rock next to each other for a nanosecond…this is all I got (notice the death-glare from the teenager LOL!):

I waved goodbye, wished them a wonderful day, and punched my fist into the air in elation as I entered the garage…WOOOT!   I am taking the WHOLE DAY off (after I finish this blogpost and one for the next post) and sewing! WOOT WOOT WOOOOOOT! Normalcy (well, what passes for it in this house) returns!

A (not so) Lost Generation

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

On one of my internet groups, a friend from Scotland posted a link to this YouTube video.  It has been around a while, but I hadn’t seen it, and like it so much I too wanted to share.

She wrote:

The Palindrome Video

“This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forwards.

Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite.

Confused ? I was … but just take 1 mnute 44 seconds to read and listen to this video.

It was submitted in a contest by a 20 year old student – the contest was called ‘U @ 50’

It won 2nd place and everyone in the room broke into spontaneous applause when they saw it.

Sometimes the simplest things are the most brilliant !”

And here is the link, and now I’m going to try to embed this in my blogpost:

Like Jan, I invite you to enjoy!

Beneath the Surface

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison came up with the idea for the Beneath the Surface exhibit, got the sponsors, juried the show, and are now doing a totally cool thing on their blog!  My quilt is the portrait of my son, Joshua (recently blogged about at length, so only a small picture here):

Jamie and Leslie have sent each of the artists a list of questions, and it looks like we’ll hit 100 percent participation with the answers.  Day by day they are adding the responses of the various artists to these questions:

1.  How do you describe yourself?
2.  What is your creative process?  planning, drawing, notes, etc.
3.  What’s your style?  Abstract, pictorial, surface design, whole cloth, etc.
4.  How long have you been a quilt maker/fiber artist?
5.  Do you listen to music when you make art?  what kind?
6.  What do you do when you are blocked creatively?
7.  Do you teach?  What’s your favorite part about teaching?
8.  Are there artistic endeavors that you have yet to do?
9.  How do you balance your family life and art?
10. What is the best part about what you do?

If you’d like to see what I said, check out today’s post, here.

To see what all the others have said, go to the Dinner at 8 Artists blog and just keep going backwards through the posts!  It’s wonderful reading!

Thanks to Moore’s sewing centers of southern California and Brother Sewing Machines for sponsoring the debut of the exhibit at the International Quilt Association show in Long Beach and to MistyFuse / Attached Inc. (loyal readers KNOW  how much I love MistyFuse!) for sponsoring the continuation of the exhibit at International Quilt Festival in Houston this coming October/November.  I’m so glad it will travel to Houston, since that means I’ll get to see it in the cloth!

Second Printing!

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Well there is LOTS of news–with the best saved for last (yes, I’m evil…<GRIN>):

  • I’ve been to Arizona to teach, blogging to come
  • the family joined me and we visited Flagstaff (which is an awesome and friendly town!) and various points including Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, the Wupatki ruins and Sunset Crater…and oh yeah, Sedona…more on that later, too
  • the laptop DIED—deceased, defunct, digitally toes-up—36 hours BEFORE I was supposed to give my slide lecture to the Arizona Quilt Guild.  We went to plan B, it worked, and everyone was gracious and understanding.  That morning I ordered the new laptop
  • I visited my beloved sister in law in LA for the first time in 27+ years, we went to the Getty and had a grand time, blogging on that to come too
  • I was home 3 days then went to Hingham, Mass., to teach at the Herring Run Guild, yes..blogging to come…and 90 minutes after I left for there my new laptop FINALLY arrived two weeks after I ordered it

and at long last….DRUM ROLL and unabashedly SNOOPY DANCING with wild ABANDON:

  • ThreadWork Unraveled has–in a mere six months–gone into a SECOND PRINTING!   I just can’t believe it… most books go into print once, are sold, and that’s it.  Thanks to phenomenal word of mouth starting with so many of you dear readers out there in cyberspace and good reviews hither and yon, the book has already gone into re-print!

So I invite you to join me in silly dancing, chocolate, a nice chilled glass of white zinfandel or your favorite sip-able (sp?), and CELEBRATE!

I’ll be back once I catch up on 2 1/2 weeks of work, student inquiries, teaching applications, quilt show applications, assorted mountains of paperwork etc. with lots of blogposts with lots of photos!

Cheers, Sarah the Elated (and really happy to be sleeping in my own bed with family close by!)

Peeps in the ‘hood

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Who says Washington, DC and the rest of the National Capitol Area don’t have a sense of whimsy?

Yes, it is that time of year again, the Peeps contest at the Washington Post!  This is as fun as the “alternative definitions” contest that comes in the doldrums of summer.   If you want to fritter a bit of time away enjoying creativity with peeps (those sticky marshmallowy Easter candies shaped like peeps (baby chicks), bunnies and whatnot), visit here:

Now…back to prepping for next week’s teaching trip…more quilty stuff soon…I hope!
