Journal Quilts

The International Quilt Festival Journal Quilt project began in 2002 and ran for several years.  It was inspired by the daily art practice found in mainstream art.  Participants were to make a quilt the size of a piece of US copy paper each month as a journal.  It was an opportunity to try new technqiues and ideas without allocating lots of time and materials.  The journals from January to September were then displayed at Festival--and if you participated, your quilts were on display, no jurying.  When I first learned of this project in fall 2002, I immediately decided if they did it again, I would participate.  And I did.  I attribute the rapidity of my learning to doing this project, and have used many of these journal quilts in my teaching and lectures to this day, over 15 years since I began them.
